At HSMSE, where most students focus on science, math, and engineering, students still find ways to be creative through the Art Elective and Mural Club. They give students the opportunity to explore artistic expression while also contributing to the school. In a STEM-focused environment, such things are important, allowing students to work together and bring color into the building.

The Art Elective, taught by Ms. DeLima, allows students to explore different media of art, including drawing and painting, through a variety of projects. Recent projects that the art students have worked on were monochromatic paintings, using different shades of only one color. Another project was an abstract piece based on the studies of a researched artist. This allows the students to develop skills and experiment with different styles of art. Other students, however, might also take the elective for different reasons, such as taking a break from subjects that are more mentally taxing or just exploring a natural interest in art. Cecilia Gebauer (’27) explained that she chose the art elective because it was “a fun way to be creative without too much pressure or stress.”

The Mural Club also relates to this, although it focuses on larger, collaborative projects throughout the school. Club members design and paint murals that add to the school’s environment, making it a better place by turning what would be dull walls into colorful works of art. While creating these murals, students have to think about more than just the design. The location, amount of space available, and approval from the school are necessary to think about during the planning process, aiming to create something standout while still fitting into the school environment.

Club co-president Avery Engel (’26) explained that these murals were designed to connect with the HSMSE community rather than just “paint something because it’s pretty.” Previous projects reflect this, including a Keith Haring–inspired mural in the stairwell between the first and B floors that connects to New York’s subway graffiti scene. Another mural is on a pillar inside B1 (where many English classes take place), depicting a bookshelf filled with books past students have read.

The impact of the Art Elective and Mural Club can be seen around the school, with many students passing by the charcoal paintings in B5 and murals throughout the school. This makes the whole school feel more personal and interesting as HSMSE students know the work was made by other students. Through the Art Elective and Mural Club, students develop their own artistic skills while also contributing to the school, leaving a lasting mark that remains on the walls long after they leave.
