In the past few months, several famous women in the movie industry, such as Diane Keaton, Brigitte Bardot, Diane Ladd, and Catherine O’Hara, have unfortunately passed away. I’m sure many of you have heard about this on social media, however, you may not have heard of these women, or may not understand why their deaths are so significant. In this article, I want to honor these women and present the various contributions they have made.
Diane Keaton, born January 5, 1946, was an American actress. She won numerous awards, such as Oscars in 1978 and 1977. She is best known for her role as Annie Hall in the 1977 romcom Annie Hall. She has also acted in movies such as The Godfather, Father of the Bride, and Something’s Gotta Give, among many more. She was known to wear gloves, dress masculinely, and to wear white. Her unusual style of dress paved the way for changes in women’s fashion and allowed for more women to dress in typically male clothing. Diane Keaton died in Los Angeles on October 11 at 79 years old, due to pneumonia. Turner Classic Movies held a tribute for her, as well as many news sources publishing obituaries, and there was a funeral held for her in Beverly Hills.
Catherine O’Hara was born on March 4, 1954, in Canada. She is known for her versatile roles as characters such as the mother in Home Alone, Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Chicken Little, and the TV series Schitt’s Creek, along with many more. She won awards such as an Emmy, a Gemini, and multiple Canadian Screen Awards best actress awards. She was known as a kind soul and as a dedicated philanthropist known for her support of many global charities throughout her lifetime. O’Hara unfortunately passed away suddenly of a pulmonary embolism on January 30 of this year at 70 years old. There was a memorial held in Los Angeles on February 14 of this year.
Brigitte Bardot was born September 28, 1934, in France. Unlike most of the other actresses written about in this article, Bardot was an international star—one of the first to reach the type of fame in other countries that she managed in America. She starred in numerous French films, but also enjoyed acting in American ones such as Act of Love. Bardot was seen as a sex symbol, attracting a largely male audience. Although she was seen this way, she used her platform to influence fashion and animal rights. She also, sadly, attempted suicide multiple times. She won many awards, such as the David Best Foreign Actress Award. Bardot also established the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Children and Animals, was a prominent muse for Bob Dylan, and heavily impacted the rise of the bikini’s popularity. Bardot’s influence is so vast that her name was even referenced in the popular song “Red Wine Supernova” by Chappell Roan. Brigitte Bardot sadly died on December 28, 2025 at 91 years old of cancer. Bardot was buried on January 2, 2026, in Saint-Tropez.
Diane Ladd was born on November 29, 1935, in Mississippi. Ladd won a BAFTA award in 1976 for best supporting actress in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a Golden Globe in 1981, and has a star on the hall of fame, as well as having won numerous other awards for her craft and being nominated for even more. She played Flo in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, the mother in Wild at Heart, and starred in Rambling Rose, among many more. Ladd had over 200 roles in movies and television, improvised many of her lines, and began her career as one of the Copa Girls at Copacabana in New York at 17 years old. She wrote an autobiography and is remembered by her daughter Laura Dern as “The greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist, and empathetic spirit.” Ladd died at 89 years old due to lung disease on November 3, 2025, in California. Flowers were placed on Ladd’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and other actors made tributes to her.
All four of these talented women lived long and impactful lives. Humanitarian efforts aside, their work will long outlive them and hopefully some readers recognize some of the titles referenced. Now, when you watch these movies, you will be able to recognize the efforts of these women.
