Every spring, Division I colleges compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Basketball Tournament, more commonly known as March Madness. This year, there will be 68 teams total competing, with the final taking place on Monday, April 6, 2026. There are many compelling contenders hoping to win the championship this year, as millions of Americans watch one of the most exciting events in American sports. In this article, I will review the five top-ranked teams in the NCAA this year.

(5) University of Connecticut

The UConn Huskies are performing extremely well this year, with many great players like Solo Ball, Braylon Mullins, and Terris Reed Jr. They have only lost two games, and with their 24–2 record, they are currently ranked first in the Big East conference. Their recent 80–70 victory over Butler has shown the potential of players like Ball, who scored 24 of UConn’s total points.

(4) University of Arizona

Previously ranked No. 1 in the NCAA, Arizona’s two recent losses have caused them to fall to No. 4, but they are nevertheless quite a strong team this season. Freshman Brayden Burries has done particularly well on the team, especially in the team’s 86–83 victory over BYU on January 26, in which he scored 29 points. Other great players like Jaden Bradley and Tobe Awaka have helped the team dominate the NCAA this season.

(3) Duke University

Every year, Duke is expected to make it far into the tournament. And it certainly won’t be different this year: With a 23–2 record, they are ranked No. 3 and are one of the most promising teams this season. Players like Cayden Boozer, Maliq Brown, and Caleb Foster have made significant contributions to their success. Key games like their February 21 63–68 victory against top-ranked UMichigan have shown us their ability to win the championship this year.

(2) University of Houston

After their 65–63 loss to Florida in the championship game last year, Houston is hoping to win the championship this year, and that seems very likely with their outstanding performance and No. 2 ranking this year. Guard Emanuel Sharp led the team to its 66–52 victory over Utah on February 10 with 27 total points scored. Other star players on the team include Milos Uzan, Kingston Flemings, and Joseph Tugler. They have had a lot of exciting games this season, and it will be very fun to watch their performance in the tournament.

(1) University of Michigan

Michigan (not to be confused with Michigan State), a team that usually makes it very far into the tournament, is ranked No. 1 among all NCAA teams this year. They have won many games against extremely strong teams, such as Nebraska, who they beat 72–75, and Gonzaga, who they beat 61–101. They have many new players this season, too, who have helped achieve their 24–1 record. Their top players include Yaxel Lendeborg, Nimari Burnett, Elliot Cadeau, and Trey McKenney. Michigan’s performance thus far has been stellar, and their victories have shown just how great the team is this year.

Overall, the NCAA basketball season has been very interesting so far, with a lot of possible contenders to win the tournament. There are many more great teams that I was not able to talk about in this article, such as Florida and Michigan State. We will get to see how each team performs when March Madness kicks off on March 15. It will be a great experience watching these teams compete this year!
