Outdoor Track

The HSMSE Outdoor Track team is as strong as ever. As they transition from their indoor to outdoor season, many runners and jumpers on the team are reaching new heights. And there’s more reason than ever to attend meets as a fan: “They’re really relaxed and intimate, and it’s really fun,” says junior jumper Aaron Wang. “This is the perfect time to go to games because they’re less intense than indoor season, so you can just enjoy the great weather and not feel left out of any competitive excitement.” Catch the girls on Tuesday May 9th and the boys on Wednesday May 10th at Harry Truman high school field. Girls Soccer
Girls Soccer

The Girls Soccer team finished with an 8-2 record this season and made the playoffs. Although they lost in the first round, they made incredible progress coming back from a 2-10 record last year. “I was hoping we wouldn’t lose as much, since last year it kinda sucked cause we didn’t have as many players. But this year it was pretty cool cause we had some great new players; the freshmen and sophomores were great,” said junior Kehaploy Kamonpanyakul. With tons of sophomore and freshman talent, next season could be exciting for the Dragons: “I’m hoping for a great run, and hopefully getting to round two in the playoffs.”

Boys Soccer

The Boys Soccer team went undefeated this season, going 10-0 in the regular season and winning all four playoff games on their way to a championship. “We were in an easier division than we likely should’ve been, so we knew from the start that if we didn’t win the championship we would’ve been disappointed.” said junior Peter Efthimou. The Dragons hope to repeat in the upcoming season: “We’re losing some seniors, which is gonna be tough, but I think we’ll do well next year.”

Girls Basketball

The Girls Basketball team finished with a 5-11 record this season, which was a solid improvement from last year’s record of 2-10. Junior Nadia Shari had great things to say about the team: “Coming in, I was kinda scared because I’d heard some teams can be super serious or competitive, but they ended up being really sweet and supportive.” About the team’s performance, she said that “a lot of people didn’t go in with high expectations, but we got pretty far and had some pretty good games.” They also have a lot of young talent going into next season: “I think next season we’re gonna do amazing, because we have all these freshmen that are gonna start playing more, I know they’re gonna do great, and I think we’ll make the playoffs, 100%.”

The Boys Basketball team finished with a 14-6 record this season and made the third round of the playoffs. “Last year we made the first round so I thought this year we could’ve possibly won the championship, but we made the third round so I think that’s a good improvement,” said junior Kwabena Acheampon-Duah. He also thinks there are significant improvements they can make to potentially win a championship next year: “I expect us to go farther in the playoffs, and really focus on the little things like boxing out, and I think we can win the championship.”

The Girls Softball team finished with a 10-2 record this season and made the first round of the playoffs. Coming off of a championship last year, they had a lot of roster changes, with seniors leaving and freshmen joining. “It was a really new team. A lot of people were trying out new positions, so we were just trying to learn how to play with each other,” said sophomore Emily Dow. The Dragons definitely learned, as they put up the best record in their division, but it was also a mixed bag: “We had a lot of injuries, which hurt us a lot. But we got to the playoffs, which is good for a school our size. And we all put in the time and practiced a lot, I think we improved a lot and I think it showed in our playing.” Because of all the new and improving players on the team, the future seems bright: “We now have a lot of freshmen who’ve been properly trained, so I think next season we’ll have a more experienced team, and I think the team as a whole will work a lot better.”

Boys Baseball
Boys Baseball

The Boys Baseball team finished with a 5-10 record this season. It was a difficult year for them, as they were promoted from the A to AA division and faced better teams than ever before. “It’s frustrating. We had a lot of very close games and we dropped a lot of them,” said junior pitcher Cooper Rodriguez. But with young and improving talent, and the team now adjusted to their new division, next year should be exciting for the Dragons: “I wanna make the playoffs, and do what everyone else wants to do and win the chip. I know softball won it last year, so I wanna show the power of baseball, get some awards, and bring home the trophy!”

Boys Volleyball

The Boys Volleyball team finished with a 6-4 record and made the first round of the playoffs this season. It was a year of great change for them, as junior Anand Schwabe described: “I thought we’d start a little slow cause we weren’t used to playing with each other, we have a pretty new team since a lot of people left last year.” As Anand predicted, the Dragons started 1-2, but went on a 5-2 run to make the playoffs. Since most of their roster is freshmen and sophomores, their future looks bright. “I’m just hoping we get a few more players, develop a bit more after losing half our starting lineup, and still get the job done and make the playoffs next year.”

Cross Country
Cross Country

The Cross Country team finished 6th for Boys and 7th for girls in the city this season. They, unfortunately, came short of qualifying for States, as junior Zac Bonnet described. “We didn’t qualify this year as a team, next year our goal is to qualify as a team. Our school’s never done that before, since you need to get top 4 in the city, and the best we’ve ever gotten is 5th.” While the team as a whole didn’t qualify, seniors Jaden Kim and Simon Chambers-Trubat and sophomore Alina Mertins Schill did!

Indoor Track
Indoor Track

The Indoor Track team finished 2nd for boys and 5th for girls in the borough this season. “We did absolutely amazing,” said senior Jaelen Pinkney, who achieved the school record for the high jump this season. “We only didn’t win Manhattan by 2 or 3 points. I think the team really improved a lot, especially the field eventers, shoutout to Shawn Weng and Jonathan Lambert, overall one of the better seasons for the Dragons.” The team had 20 people qualify for cities, and they have focused goals for next season. Junior Zohar Almani says “We just wanna beat Hunter and win #1 in Manhattan”.

Outdoor Track

The Outdoor Track team finished 3rd for boys and 4th for girls in the borough this season. “I expected to have a lot of fun given all the people that carried over from indoor track,” said junior Jasson Pineda. “Getting to practice at Icahn was one of the highlights of the season, and overall I think the season was great for a lot of people.” Junior captain Charlotte Almond described how while “these last few years, the team has been out of balance because so many of the older athletes left or just didn’t have time to train due to COVID, every season it gets a little better.” The team had 8 people qualify for cities this season and Charlotte says that “next year I’m excited to see what a fully-functioning team can do!”

Frisbee
Frisbee

The Frisbee team is HSMSE’s newest school team. While they’re not registered officially or on PSAL, they’ve been able to organize practices and games with other schools thanks to the DiscNY League. “We just wanted to have a good time, have fun with all the kids who wanted to play frisbee, give them a space to play and practice, and the season really has exceeded my expectations,” said the team’s captain, junior Isaiah Tsai. He wants to make sure the team can play again next year: “I just hope that we have a next season, it was kind of a special circumstance that we were able to do it this year, and I don’t know if our coach will be available next year.” The team is also looking for more rising juniors next season, as they had none this season.

Frisbee Awards

As the frisbee teams didn’t get to hand out awards at the banquet like the rest of the teams, we’ve included a section for them to honor their outstanding players:

Rookie of the Year: Ansel Shirasu-Hiza – Absolutely electric as an initiating cutter and his motor as a deep threat provided our offense a dynamism that was tough to contain.

Most Improved Player: Elliot Hernandez – Made huge strides with his throwing throughout the season. As the season progressed he emerged as a punishing downfield defender, regularly generating impressive blocks to get us the disc back.

MVP: Eli Lipman – A true do it all player. He slotted in at every position on the field for us and always found a way to make an impact.  More importantly his teammates believed in him, always looking to him to make plays when he was on the field.

Coach’s Award: Lily Yan – Dogged defender who could be trusted to pressure big throwers and nullify their impact, yet remained a calming presence as a handler, consistently available for resets and kept our offense alive and in flow.
