Every year, the HSMSE community returns to Baskerville Hall from our well-deserved summer break. For the next ten months, we navigate tough homework assignments, week long projects, busy hallways, early morning office hours, and sports practices. We share both in our frustration and our excitement.
During your time at MSE, you might become the leader of a club or the captain of a sports team—maybe even a Liu Legend, if math is your thing. No matter what it is, at some point during your high school career you will find yourself exercising leadership skills. Maybe your club needs to raise funding for a big competition, or maybe your team wants to advocate for more practices and support, or maybe you raise your hand in class to debate an absurd due date. Regardless of the scale or goal, HSMSE students are innovators who crave a chance to problem solve. For some, that means taking action through The Echo and inciting larger-scale social and community changes.
I first came across The Echo during my freshman year. At first, I had assumed it was just a little slow to put out an issue that year, but I soon learned that The Echo was a new HSMSE institution. By the time sophomore year rolled around, I was ready to get involved. I wasn’t necessarily looking to spark change in our school, just awareness and spirit. I wanted to bring attention to sports, specifically female athletes, at a STEM school.
The strongest tool HSMSE students have is their voice, and that voice is amplified by contributing to our school’s newspaper. From different sections of writing to art styles, The Echo is a resource for a genuine connection with other students. Every issue balances the wants and needs of our school. Whether you know what story you want to report on, or not, The Echo excels when it projects all of the student voices of HSMSE.
Join The Echo to share your voice. You can find past issues of The Echo in the dungeon (C5) or online at https://theechohsmse.com/.
