Since I was a kid I have always been captivated by sunsets. Their variety and beauty make the sky look like it was painted by a different artist every evening. In New York City, the contrast of the setting sky and the striking buildings makes for an alluring medley in the horizon. I have always enjoyed capturing the beauty that surrounds me, so, over the years, I have amassed quite the collection of sunset photographs. The most recent of these photographs was taken on May 30, 2025—this sunset was particularly special because it marked the first of this year’s Manhattanhenges. Manhattanhenge (a term coined by Neil deGrasse Tyson), is a biannual event that marks the dates when the sunset perfectly aligns with Manhattan’s street grid. If you would like to be able to witness this enchanting solar event, the next one appears on July 11 of this year. Good viewing spots are on any wide streets that go from the Hudson to the East river. I went to the Pershing Square Viaduct right outside Grand Central Station.
In this issue, I am sharing seven of my favorite sunset photographs, all taken here in NYC. They are scattered throughout the paper. Beware, however, for in the last issue I promised tomfoolery: If you dare to look closely at the photographs, you may notice that one of them is a sunrise. Email me which one it is at [email protected] and a reward may be gifted to thee.
