Every school has its landmarks, but this tree—grand, weathered, and steadfast—has become more than just a part of the scenery. Nestled by the entrance to HSMSE, it stands as a silent observer, growing and transforming just like the students who pass under its shade.
Students and teachers from generations have walked past this tree. It might have been here when MSE students moved from trailers to the actual campus building that we know and love today. It was there to welcome freshman classes, look over stressed sophomores and juniors, and congratulate graduating seniors. The tree watched as we became the #1 school in New York, and as our honored soccer, softball, baseball, basketball, and track teams won. Unlike most of the other trees on campus, this one has been at the front seat to all of our school’s accomplishments.
As we all change throughout our semesters at MSE, this tree changes too. It gets covered in snow in the winter; it blooms new flowers in the spring; it grows vibrant green leaves in the summer, which turn beautiful shades of red and yellow in the fall. All the while, we students grow in our abilities to succeed. Each cycle of the seasons represents new beginnings, growth, and moments of stillness—just like the student journey.
This tree is not only our landmark, but also our source of inspiration. No matter how rough life might get in the last months of the school year, look up at this tree. It has been with us since the beginning, and it will be with us until the end!
